In the Human Environmental Learning & Memory (HELM) Laboratory at the University of Nevada, Reno, we study how the mind and brain facilitate complex spatial cognition and navigation behaviors — with the ultimate goal of augmenting human cognition and mitigating the effects of aging and disease.

Research Questions

What determines the fundamental structure of spatial representations?

How do humans flexibly deploy spatial knowledge in a goal-dependent manner?

Which cognitive functions interact with spatial cognition during navigation and how?

How do spatial abilities change across the lifespan and in neurological disorders?

Methodology

We address these questions using a combination combination of behavioral and neuroimaging tools including novel experimental paradigms, immersive virtual reality (VR; head-mounted displays + omnidirectional treadmills), and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). We are also interested in electroencephalography (EEG) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) for measuring and perturbing human brain function.
